Abstract rust at the abandoned barn of Fossfjörður

Snaking along the edge of the Westfjords in the far northwest of Iceland there are a number of barns and rusting vehicles. Abandoned and long forgotten they are becoming more beautiful with each winter storm. The remote shoreline hosts a solitary and weathered old barn, where the Atlantic sea salt is gradually corroding the tin roof and further ageing the silver wood with each passing winter.

barn with fjord and mountains behind

The barn at Fossfjörður sits on the shoreline and can be seen clearly from a distance. The tin panels on the sides of the roof are orange and rusting, while the wooden sides and window frames have turned a perfect silver grey. It is only small in this huge landscape but with no other buildings around it stands out.

  • A barn with Iceland landscape behind
  • triangular streaks of rust
  • silver wooden window
  • streaks of red silver and yellow rust
  • orange rust details
  • pastel rust colours
  • Ripples of rust
  • a wooden windowsill rotting
  • Streaks of red rust

Finding the Abandoned Triangular Barn at Fossfjörður

The barn is located on the shore of road 63 a short distance from the village of Bíldudalur. There is a pull-in at the top of the track down to the barn which means you are parked off the road.

  • Near Bíldudalur on road 63 in the Westfjords region
  • Find the location on Google Maps
  • Check the road conditions before setting off to the barn. The mountain passes on either side of Arnarfjörður can be closed in the winter months
  • Ensure that you park safely and do not trespass in any way, this barn is private property
