Lighthouses in Northern Ireland

Lighthouses in Northern Ireland serve as vital maritime navigational aids along its extensive coastline, which is characterised by rugged cliffs and challenging waters. These structures play a critical role in ensuring the safety of ships transiting through the Irish Sea and along the Northern Irish coast.

The design and characteristics of Northern Irish lighthouses vary, with some exhibiting distinctive features such as unique paint schemes or tower shapes to aid in identification. These structures serve as symbols of maritime heritage and have witnessed significant technological advancements, transitioning from oil lamps and rotating lenses to fully automated systems with powerful electric lamps and advanced optics.
