everything about road trip planning

The late Douglas Adams has a quote which I love – “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be” – this to me sums up the beauty of a road trip, whilst you may know the eventual destination it’s the journey that is the adventure.

And to make the road trip a success (and minimise stress) I hope I can share with you some of the tips, tricks and advice I have learnt along the way which has seen some amazing adventures.

If you’ve never been on a road trip or are musing if you should, then read this article with a growing number of reasons why a road trip is the perfect adventure. If you don’t know where you fancy going have a look at some favourite road trips from across the world and see if any of these spark your imagination. Finally, if you don’t think you have time then think again, there is always a way to make time for adventures

Once you’ve started to make up your mind on the trip then I’ve prepared some pointers with tips for planning a road trip. These steps are my first, high level approach which lets the plans and ideas form into an outline. From there I have a checklist that covers the things to consider.

Early Ideas

A road trip has to start somewhere so these guides will help you in the early stages of planning your road trip. You may not know where you want to go or you may have very fixed ideas. Start looking at places and see what evolves. A long weekend somewhere may turn into the biggest adventure of your life.

Fine Tuning your Road Trip

Once your plan outline is in place it is time to fill out the days. These guides will give you ideas for things that need to be done and my travel guides will show you what to do in specific locations. Always make sure that you have options depending on weather, road conditions and your tiredness on any particular day. A road trip isn’t a lazy holiday on the beach and quiet days must be scheduled into the plan!

On the Road

Once all the planning is done it is time to go, but it isn’t as easy of walking out of the door! There are a few things that need to be done to make sure everything goes to plan. • Getting your car prepared – your car is your holiday and it needs to be safe and ready for your road trip. This is a guide to making this happen
  • How to take pets on a road trip – pets love road trips but you do need to think about their needs
  • Road trips with kids – harder than pets, kids need to be considered during all your planning if they are coming with you
  • Apps to make your road trip run smoothly – technology helps make a road trip run smoothly but there are so many choices that it can be hard to find something useful
  • How to pack for a road trip – a road trip doesn’t limit you to carry-on or 23kg of baggage but at the same time you can’t take everything
  • Photography and Kids on a Road Trip – how to blend a family holiday with getting great photographs
  • How to make a road trip fun in bad weather – the weather isn’t always going to be perfect but adapting your plans can help make the best of the conditions.
  • Tide times and how to stay safe – information on how to work out high tide and low tide so you can visit remote areas safely.
