The Early Lapwing who Catches the Worm

Pulling up on the side of the field, the lapwings seemed disinterested in my presence.  These colourful birds, also known as peewits (Vanellus vanellus) reside in vast flocks on Orkney, their numbers increasing dramatically over the winter months.

They spend their time feeding in the fields, looking for grubs and in this case a rather juicy worm.  As with other species including the puffin this once common bird is now declining in numbers and is a Red List endangered species.
