The Shouting Crestie

He arrived from nowhere, jumping down each branch of the massive Scots pine. Announcing his arrival to every female within his small territory. Even when no-one seemed to be interested, not even the numerous coal tits, he continued to shout.

This small crested tit (Lophonphanes cristatus) is resident in a compact area of the Scottish Highlands. Less ornate than some of the other tits found in the UK, he has a unique face pattern and a pointed crest. The more agitated they become, the more pointed the crest becomes.

The are found in the ancient Caledonian forests of Scotland, feeding on small insects and pine nuts gathered from the trunks of these huge, fire retardant trees. In early winter they store food ready for the sparse, hungry months of late winter.
