How to Add a clickthrough gallery in squarespace

With my love for photography I have been learning how to use Squarespace to get the final look I want. My wildlife gallery page is a collection of images all with links to the relevant pages. It is easy to set up and as I add more themes it is easy to add to.

Some themes on Squarespace work in different ways so I have provided two ways to get the main gallery to link to the individual galleries. I use Brine and this is the theme used for the screen shots. Before getting frustrated double check that your theme allows clickthough urls.

If you can’t get it to work for your theme, leave a comment and I will see what I can do!

Make the gallery pages

Make an unlinked gallery for each item. This can be a normal page or a gallery. Just make sure you are consistent. I use a page so I can add a title header, some information and a link to my blog posts. If you are doing lots you can duplicate the page so the formatting is consistent and you can change the text and images. I also find making a folder to contain all the gallery pages helps keeps things tidy.

Make a primary gallery page

In your main navigation menu (or wherever you want your primary gallery to appear), make a new page. This needs to be a page so you can add the links. Just choose a plain blank layout.

Add Image Files

Once you have added a title and any text you want start to add images. These will be the link through to your individual files. I have found that adding individual images is much better as you can use the poster layout. Click on the ‘add’ symbol and select image.

Design layout

Once your image has uploaded and you have given it a name, click on the top right design tab and select ‘poster’ layout. This will allow you to type the gallery title that it links to directly over the image.

Add the click through

Click on the dark box on the design tab. This will give you options to create a link. You can either enter the url directly using the external tab or click on ‘content’ and scroll down to find the page or gallery that you made earlier. If you host your images elsewhere like Flickr or smugmug then add the page url for a direct link.

Save changes and repeat

Clck the apply tab at the bottom of the pop up to save the changes. Repeat this process for each gallery you want to link through to.

Alternative Method

If you find that you can’t link in this way you may be able to do it using a gallery block. Add a gallery block in the usual way and upload each image you need. Ensure you select a grid layout and allow clicks on the image and text below.

Click on the edit icon on each image to be able to edit the details. Give the file a name as this will appear on the page and then in the same way as the first method add the click through url.

Remember to save changes for each image before moving on the next. This will give a gallery with clickthrough but the page title will be below the image.

Final appearance

You can tweak the appearance of this page by using different shaped image in the gallery, altering the space between images and the placement of text.

The beauty of this is you can images as you make new galleries really easily.
